Wine culture

„Vinum vita est“ Petronius Arbiter (†66 AC), Satyricon

Wine gave life to the Etruscan banquets, real dionisic celebrations of the senses. Scantily dressed youths drew wine and water (as was traditional for the ancients) in jugs from basins and poured it into large goblets.

Thanks to the tradition of placing splendid (sumptuous) goblets in the tombs, many fine examples have been preserved, amongst which is a goblet of Exekias, dated around 530 BC, depicting Dionisio in a vessel decorated with grape vines sailing on a “wine red “ sea.
