FROM EARTH TO THE SEA
Maremma, called by Romans “maritima” – the land near the sea – does not offer the usual scenery of picturesque avenues of cypresses and small typical villages. Maremma is a unique natural landscape rich in forest, minerals and coastlines, with only a few cultural references. For this reason, this area of Southern Tuscany for centuries has been sadly famous for its swamps and malaria, the pestilential air often reaching as far as the vallies of Chianti, so well described by Dante in his masterpiece.
