Ampeleia on Antonio Galloni's VINOUS

Once again, I was deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Ampeleia. These gorgeous Maremma reds deserve much more love. Over the last few years, Ampeleia has emerged as one of the most exciting properties on the Tuscan coast. Proprietress Elisabetta Foradori and her team prove they can also make great wines in Tuscany, not just Trentino. My only regret is I rarely see these wines in the market, which is a real shame. Readers who can find any of these wines should not hesitate.

(From In a Tuscan State of Mind  – Aug 2013, by Antonio Galloni)

Sweet herbs, mint, anise, fennel and bright red cherries waft from the glass in the Unlitro, colorfully packed in a one-liter bottle. I am intrigued by this high-toned, fragrant wine because of its gorgeous balance. Although simple and unfussy, there is a sense of pure joy in the 2012 that is impossible to miss. (1 liter)

KEPOS 2011*

Juicy, dark and enveloping, the 2011 Kepos wraps around the palate with seemingly endless layers of fruit. The 2011 isn't a big wine, but it is highly attractive, not to mention impeccably balanced. Hints of rose petal, cinnamon and mint add lift on the finish. This is a drop-dead gorgeous wine from Ampeleia. Kepos is 40% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre, 10% Carignano, 5% Alicante Bouschet and 5% Marsellan.

Score: 93

Another compelling red, the 2010 Ampeleia is dark and rich but not at all heavy. An exotic mélange of blackberries, sage, rosemary and crushed rocks emerges over time, but it is the wine's textural finesse that impresses most. This is a seriously beautiful wine from Ampeleia. The blend is approximately 60% Cabernet Franc, 25% Sangiovese and 15% assorted other grapes.

Score: 94+
